Eligibility guidelines

  1. The Award longlist, shortlist & winner will be determined by the judges as:

The book published in the preceding financial year that, in the opinion of the judges, has provided the most compelling contribution to the understanding of Australian political events and debates.

  1. The Award is open to either Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia at the time of entry.
  2. Entries must be in English. Bilingual editions are eligible, as are books first published in another language and then translated into English and first published in English during the eligibility period.
  3. The Award must go to a book published in the preceding financial year (e.g., the Award announced in 2023 will be for a book published in 2022-23 financial year).
  4. Books must be available for purchase in Australia. 
  5. Ineligible books include
    1. Fiction books
    2. Second edition books
    3. Books consisting primarily of photographs or illustrations that include minimal descriptive text or captions
    4. Books that are a collection of essays or stories by multiple contributors
    5. Books written by judges, or employees of The Award.
  6. Books published only in ebook form can be entered, and submitted on CD in PDF format. CDs must be posted or delivered, not emailed. Six CDs will be required, and printed copies must be available on request for judging purposes.
  7. If a publisher, editor, or agent is entering a book, there must be written consent from the author to enter the Award.

Please note that physical copies are preferred, and the Award requires eight copies for judging and promotional purposes. In situations where further promotion of books is required, the Award may contact relevant entities for additional copies.

In the spirit of reconciliation, the Australian Political Book of the Year Award acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their enduring connection to land, water and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
